The tale of Eros and Psyche has proved one of most enduring and beloved Greek myths. Partially, I think its popularity stems from the combination of its specific, romantic story, and its allegorical implications— the two main characters have names that literally mean “soul” and “desire.” So you can see why those interested in myth and psychology (like Carl Jung, for example) loved it. For me, the story has always felt more fairytale than ancient myth. There are jealous sisters, quests of penance, helpful animals, and a supposedly-hideous monster who turns out to be a handsome god. And it’s one of the few love stories in mythology with a happy ending. The first time that the two consummate their love, it is in total darkness—Eros has forbidden her to look at him. This is an interesting moment that could be taken a lot of different ways, the most appealing of which is that love is about trust: having faith in your heart and in the bonds you have built with those close to you.
I won’t spoil the rest of the story, but it’s worth a read if you’re not familiar with the rest. All this to say that each year when February rolls around, I return to this narrative not only because I love a good tale, but because it touches on themes of trust and devotion—to one’s own loves and values, and also to the precious connections between us. What better month to celebrate and meditate upon such ideas?
Anyway, I’m back! I’ve just returned from a couple weeks away frolicking about tropical island lands. Growing up in northern California, I’ve always been most at home as a creature of the forest and the mountains, so this was new for me—I snorkeled, rode horses, lounged on a black sand beach, and kayaked across an incredible bioluminescent bay.
